Trying to draw up all my wiring diagrams ready for the re-wire in a month or two. I have a copy of a Mk1 Escort Post-1969 wiring diagram but the colours shown do not match what I have in front of me (I bought this wiper mechanism from a forum members a number of months ago - Ulsterman??) and believe it is a Mk1. The colours are also different from the original 1970 motor I took out of the car. The wiring diagram also appears to show 6 wires but that may just be my inexperience reading wiring diagrams.

Can anybody tell me which wire on mine does what???? I assume this is a two speed motor.
Wiper wiring is fun isn't it Basically, the dash switch is an earth-side switch, with the power being applied to the motor and then earthed various ways through the dash switch. There is also a switched circuit that keeps the motor going after you turn the dash switch off until the motor reaches its parked position.
As per the Mk1 wiring diagram:
Dash switch position 1 slow:
Electricity flows from fuse block pin 7 to the wiper motor via the Black/Purple (54-3) wire, through the motor to the dash switch via the Green (53) wire then to earth (at or near the wiper motor) via the Brown (31-121) wire.
Dash switch moved from position 1 to position 0 (off)
Electricity flows from fuse block pin 7 to the motor via Black/Purple (54-3), out via Green (53) to the dash switch, back to the wiper park switch via Brown (31b1). Until the wiper is in the park position, the motor is connected to earth via the wiper park switch so the motor keeps running. When the wiper gets to the park position, the wiper park switch connects the Black/Purple (54-3) wire to the dash switch via the Brown (31b1) wire, then back to the motor via the Green (53) wire. Both poles of the motor now see 12v so the motor stops.
Dash switch position 2 (if fitted)
Electricity flows from fuse block pin 7 to the wiper motor via the Black/Purple (54-3) wire, through the motor to the dash switch via Black (F1-53) wire then to earth (at or near the wiper motor) via the Brown (31-121) wire. I'm pretty sure this connects to different windings in the motor to achieve the faster speed.
So that's how it works. You just have to decide which wires on the wiper you have match the wires in the above description! You might have to pull it apart so you can see which wires go to the park switch.
The colours you have don't match the mk2 circuit diagram either.
No I dont. I am totally rewiring the car and will use a more modern switch somewhere. If I can firm up what the 5 wires I have do then the rest will be easy
I have an EA Falcon steering column switch assembly that I was thinking of making fit. I may also just stay with the standard Mk1 Escort single stalk switchgear. Will come down to time me thinks.
In my Mk1 i went to try the wipers yesterday cos i finally received my wiper switch (on/off - no speed variation). went to the car and found....6 wires coming from the wiper motor. 3 of them have been cut off, and the other 3 (brown, green, blue) were going into a 2 pin plug. (switch being 3 pin) that 2 pin plug was joined to 2 wires with the correct joiners on them. they then headed off into a big loom.... where do i plug my wiper switch in?
OK, I have just been around this loop but used the original MK1 Switch. Unfortunately if you get a normal SPDT or DPDT switch you may need to change a few things. have alook at the PIC I scratched out when I was decipering mine, Some idiot had cut it up the harness and changed it So I had to get it back working normally.
FYI 1. the Wiper is supplied with +12 V from ACC or IGN feed, your choice. (Green with Brown Stripe)
2. Hi Speed (Blue/Green) when its Grounded the wiper speed will increase.
3. Green is Motor Ground, to complete the circuit.
4. Dark Green is the Ground to park the wiper.
To stop the wiper if we just remove the power the wiper will stop wherever it is in its rotation. Instead we remove the Ground wire to remove continuity of the circuit. So when we start the wiper operation we Ground the green wire. to increase the speed we flick the wiper switch to position 2 which grounds the Blue/Green wire and increases wiper speed. To stop the wiper we flick the switch backup to off, this disconnects the gnd from the green wire and connects the dark green wire to GND. the wiper continues as it is being grounded internally via the offset cam inside. When it gets to the park position the cam is open and the circuit is broken and the operation stops.
the pins on the back of a std wiper switch is shown in the diagram that should help.
hopefully when i rewire my car, i won't any of these issues (you'd friggin hope not with a brand new loom) if the wiring in my car wasnt so chopped up, i would attempt to repair it.
That should work OK, you just need to figure out which wires go where. There's an intermittent wiper relay available from hella or narva I think, you should try and plumb that in as well.
