Engineers Certification

Hi all,

I am currently getting ready to convert my van to a Zetec motor from the current pinto. As I would like to be able to regularly drive the car on the road I would like it to be legit and have an engineers cert for the car.

So wondering if anyone has gone through the process of getting this done and if so any tips would be greatly appreciated as this is really my first project. Also any thoughts on who is good to talk to in the greater Melbourne area.

I wouldnt think you would need a eng certificate in NSW any way as its(zetec) is the same CC engine unless you change its original mount location,you may get away with just an engine number change and away you go.

I suggest you consult an automotive engineer and establish what you need to do to satisfy the authorities as the requirements alter greatly from state to state.

According to the Vicroads website i will definately require a Engineers Certificate

Replacement engine is not of a type offered by the vehicle manufacturer as an option for that vehicle or where alterations, or changes to the vehicle's frame or structure are made, and/or specially fabricated supports or structures are used
You will need to attend a VicRoads Customer Service Centre for an inspection of the vehicle to confirm the new engine details. You will also need to complete a Change of Vehicle Description form [PDF 24kb] and provide VicRoads with:

a VASS Approval Certificate from a VicRoads Vehicle Assessment Signatory
an original receipt for the purchase of the engine as proof of ownership of the engine

I think a friend of mine has put his hand up to buy it, as it has a full injection kit attached to it.

Just an update for anyone thinking of doing a similar conversion.

As far as getting the car legitimately engineered with a Zetec motor, any vehicle built after 1 Jan 74 the Zetec motor will have to be equipped with all the anti pollution gear that was originally fitted to it including catalytic converters and will have to run on the original ECM fitted to that motor.

The only other option is to have your vehicle emissions tested, which for a large fee would surely fail.

Any vehicles built prior to 1 Jan 74 you can pretty much do whatever you want, as back then emissions testing didnt exist yet.

So it looks like a large change in plan for me of one sort or another.

Hi Mate.

I will be running a fully engineered Zetec with OEM inlet, ECU and sensors and I doubt it will be too much bother.

The only difficulty will be if ou favoured the later blacktop (Focus) as you will need the later ECU which runs the passive immobiliser incorperated within the ECU and ignition key. If you used the earlier Zetec from the Mondeo then this is negated as it was not introduced.

I will be fabricating new mounts similar to the WCXM style but poitioned a little lower on the Xmember to give the manifold clearance.

I know of an aftermarket plug in ECU that resembles the OEM item which I might investigate which is rumoured to give an extra 20HP using OEM manifolds. Stage 2

Stage 3 might see a whole aftermarket set-up eventually
