Found info about the SAE test procedures on the fram.com website - tried to cut&paste but couldn't.
Single pass efficiency refers only to 10-20micron partical size. I would imagine that larger particles are 100% filtered but smaller is unknown. If 10micron particles damage an engine, what do 9.9 micron particles do?
I have spoken to one engineer at a well known manufacturer that wouldnt give me the test results or answer the 9.9micron question
why am I interested this - well I just spent $000's on a motor and $00's on the best oil then grabbed a $10 filter in a cardboard box with only a part # on it and thought twice about what i was doing.
Surely all filters do not give the same test results - and why aren't the results on the box ?
Finding more info than b4 by using "oil filter test results" in search engines. Although I am yet to find any independent scientific results, there are a number from ppl who have cut open a number of compatible filters and carefully looked at what they have inside. The following link is an Australian example and I think I will do the same for 2L filters.
At the moment I have retail sources in WA for Ryco Z89A, Wesfil, Donaldson, Motorcraft AFL5071, ACDelco & Fleetguard. Still looking for Cooper, Mobil1, K&N, Amsoil EAO15. Leads and donations welcomed!
Yeah I did see that one Bruce but at different pages. I used the other example cos it was from Oz and a bit more applicable. This sort of comparison would change quickly due to brands changing manufacturer or even using several different manufacturers, but I am still keen to give it a go. Are u interested in selling me 1 of yours so I can cut it up ?
Filtering the contaminants will not really save your engine will it?
Assuming from what i've read of your posts and assumed how you present your vehicle, that you indeed have thoroughly built your engine, then if there is foreign particles passing through the oil, i would assume that something has already failed?
If this be the case then having a finer filter would prolong the inevitable, so would you be better off just getting regular oil tests carried out to monitor oil performance and contaminants?
Sorry, heading off topic. But an option none the less.
I noticed Fram filters on a couple of V8 supercars a couple of years ago, when I spoke to the teams concerned they both spoke of other brands (no names here) splitting and it being enough of a concern to them specifying Frams which no one had ever had any problems with.
I must admit I do not know what the latest oil filter set ups for these guys is at the moment.
I can't see the actual oil pressure (in a race v8) being an issue, I would be guessing they would still only run about 80/120 psi max which any filter should be able to handle. Again just guessing but a failure would more likely be due to a manufacturing fault, so may be quality control (of manufacture) is more of an issue for the race teams.
As far as the worth of actually filtering the contaminants out of the oil, there is a book out on engine failure diagnosis (I think it was put out by ACL and written by an ex Repco engineer). The local library here has a copy, I will post the name when I can check it.
It has lots of photos of failed bearings, scuffed pistons and cylinder walls caused by contaminated oil. Reading it has made me much more conscious of oil and filter changes even on an engine that does very few miles....
I have used the K&N version of the Z9 filter before, they are "supposed" to be the ducks nuts. I say supposed to be becuase I am sure someone would have had one fail somewhere in the world...they do look good ie stong construction etc but that is me just looking down the barrell of one. They do have a large nut on the end and holes for locking wire as well. I got mine from GoGear here in Perth, about $25
I think FRAM do a competition one as well apart from the standard replacement ones, I think the catalogue number is #1
