Will it fit a Pinto?

Postby MK1_Oz » Fri Oct 04, 2013 6:00 pm

Came across this link whilst researching and blue sky thinking about a custom Pinto cylinder head design. Never seen the guts of an F1 engine before and seeing the ports is great.

Seen this, it is doing the rounds on the various performance forums. Although the heads are couple of years old, it makes for some intersting reading.

Mickas, read again: Head fastening is by studs & nut access is via the tappet bores, pictures show clearly when you realise where to look.
rgds,
SFE

"A Quick mention of the head studs and securing nuts. These are normally a major problem in terms of room required for acess to them in order to remove the head. In this case everything has to come out in order to undo the huts and remove the head. Once the cams and pneumatic valves have been removed a crows foot spanner is used to undo nuts as they are not directly accessible with a straight socket. It is similar to some Ferrari production engines in this way necessitating the use of a special tool."

This image gives a good Idea how access is gained through the tappet bore with the crows foot spanner

Have a look at the cam lobes. to suit the splayed valves and buckets the faces are angled longitudinally across the lobe. magical machining.
You wouldn't want to be in a rush removing the heads, Everything needs to come off to get to the head studs, but I guess F1 mechanics know what they are doing.

This is actually a very old V10 head, as it still uses a regular type bucket and lobe profile. The later heads went to a spigoted bucket first which used a raised crown to use even bigger lift camshafts as the lobes literally wipe off the edge of a flat bucket as you'll notice the cam lobes are already quite a small base circle diameter which also makes them very harsh on buckets/ The spigots are to stop the bucket from spinning allowing it to only move straight up and down.
From there the lobes started to change shape even further to where some are almost square, so they went to a roller finger follower so they could open and close the valves even faster which allowed them to hit the 19-20000rpm range.
