Am changing to Duratec and in order to finance this new project I need to pass on my YB to a good home somewhere. Selling complete less throttle bodies, will come with Titan Dry Sump (including pump), CP Pistons 12:1, Tighe Camshafts, Iskenderian Valve Springs, Quaife Verniers, Nitrided Crankshaft, Nissan H Beam Forged Conrods, Ceramic coated Custom 4-1 Headers ( designed to Pipemaster Specs based on engine specs ), Alloy Bellhousing, Lightened flywheel, NPC Paddle Clutch, Gear reduction Starter Motor, 75A Alternator.
Engine is located in Townsville, I am open to any reasonable offer, give me a call on 0448-744729

John a Duratec will make less horspepower and be more expensive to maintain

All jokes aside John, I've got a fair idea what an asking price for this engine would be as I have just spent 3 years and $$$$ building. Very similar spec to mine except for the dry sump and the rods. I have to ask, why have you changed track? PM if you to keep that private

Changing to Duratec is a decision you won't regret.

I can't believe that it could possibly be more expensive. If you get over the need to buy "brand name" rods and pistons you can several reasonable US brand combos for $500 - 600 that fit without machining. No bespoke parts required.

Cosworth don't upgrade the standard crank until in excess of 250 bhp. Savings here.

Then there is the weight saving. And ability to use late model 5/6 speed gearboxes.

Oh and you can get one from the wreckers for $500 and if it fails go back and buy another one. Not that failures are likely.

Interesting Ford and Mazda have decided for the last 7 or so years to use Duratecs in their road car and derivities in applicable race and rally cars. But why would they when they could have used a 25 year old YB that was designed with a turbo.

Cheers,

Mike.

Totally agree, while I think the YB is a great engine, goes well and sounds great, looks a treat under the bonnet, the weight savings and availability of reasonably priced parts can't be ignored. If I was just doing the odd sprint and hillclimb I would never part with it, and if I had heaps of bucks I would keep it and bung it back in when I decide to only do these types of events, or build another car for the street and low level events. I think that the duratec will become, in the near future, like the Holden Red motor used to be. You'll be able to pick one up on any street corner for next to nothing, so if you trash one it's no big deal just visit the wreckers and get another.
By the way love the Monty Python bit

Sooooo, apart from the cheaper rods, better availability, more torque, able to use 5/6spd gearboxes and the weight savings....what has the Duratec ever done for us.

Couldn't resist!

John I hate to be the bearer of bad news but no you will not make as much horsepower out of a 2000cc engine as yes the heads flow more standard and they are cheap to buy engines from the wreckers. Where they fall down is their ability to rev due to the bore and stroke and have issues with cracking the blocks and crank shafts. No this is not here say but came from the guys responsible for the development at Cosworth as they had to crack test the blocks every rebuild and if there was any hint of a crack the blocks were binned and if they survived they were rebuilt and binned on the second service. Cranks were also reviewed. The other issues were valve springs etc. He also talked about hp figures and even let out that even the 2.3lt Formula Atlantic engines never cracked 300hp and that an engine in a 600kg open wheeler and not a 950kg sedan!
You would be better of getting your cylinder head done properly as yours will not make any decent power with induction and exhaust you're using at the moment as you would have noticed when I over took you at Morgan Park from the rear of the grid with the wrong diff ratio

Thanks Danny, your entitled to your opinion like everybody else, wouldn't be bagging anybody else's performance though based on the one race you have been on the same track as me. As i recall i finished the meeting well in front of you overall as you packed up and went home after one race. As one well known racer once said " to finish first, first you must finish". Anyway lets leave it at that shall we. i didn't put this post up to expel the virtues of any particular engine or any particular car/driver if your happy with running a YB that's fine. i too am happy with it as it is but have decided to try a different path. see ya on the track.

John I was only there for the day as I had to work the next day and I missed qualifying because of a hose failure and did not practice the day before. Unless you turbo charge the duratec it will not be competitive and for the amount of money you will spend on a duratec you'll will have spent a truck load more than what you would sorting out your YB as yours just hasn't been done correctly, just look at your pipes and inlet manifold to start with

Nobody at all interested in this. I hope that Danny Mischok's comments have not deterred anyone. Engine makes good power despite his opinion, and will run all day at 8500 without any issues. It is not an over the top build with massive camshafts , welded chambers, massive throttle bodies and huge headers but a engine built to finish every event. My car is quite overweight, 1070kg with me in it, but it is still capable of running up with the top 2.0l QIPRA cars, it is only my driving that let's it down. Being in Townsville I have limited seat time and it shows on the track, but I enjoy myself and that is all that matters to me.
