Someone correct me if i'm wrong but... a Bilstein Strut was made by "Bilstein" and actually used the strut tube as the damper casing. A Bilstein Insert was just that, same as a Koni or Monroe etc., you unscrew the top of the tube and the insert slides out. No doubt someone with graeter knowledge will be able to tell us the advantages of one over the other.

Gary, the Bilstein strut takes the upside-down Bilstein insert (ie. nuts holds the rod at the bottom of the strut). These came in 2 flavours I know of, one for Group 1/2/4 Escorts (ie. a 905 part) and the other was the Capri 2.8i which had a narrower rod and uses a small nut. As you point out Bilstein also do a regular insert for a regular Capri or Escort strut. The Bilstein strut is a little meatier around the brake caliper ears and the tube itself is thicker. I know Gartrac and a few other take regular Capri stub axles, remove the tube and weld in tubes to take the upside-down insert. I think the mob in NZ also sell just the tubes with an adjustable coil-over setup on it. BTW, I see Gartrac are also making strut legs to take the Proflex style dampers now if anyone is interested (and has the money). Cheers

Thanks for that, so the "Bilstein Strut" still had a removable insert?

Hi, new to this forum - doing up a Mk1 for the son.
After some advice. Have been sent a set of Bilstein Grp 4 strut inserts in error. Was after the std insert. Have been advised Bilstein inserts for std struts are no longer available. Is this the case? If so what options do I have for a reasonable quality insert/damper for the front and rear (rear is the older eye-eye).
If Bilstein still supplies, what is the ref number I need to quote.
Are there any other options I should consider?
Thanks in anticipation. Ian
