As some of you may have noticed, I am having a propblem with sound quality when editing my videos through "Pinnacle Studio DV". The problem is not with "YouTube" as they sound that way before uploading. The raw footage on the hard drive sounds fine. Any ideas??

haven't used pinnacle for ages...so can't help there, how about trying a short vid using Windows Movie maker...it's quite simple but for just converting the vids from DV to Mpeg should be OK

Thanks Craig. I tried that of course, but it won't even load it up. There is some problem with a missing codec apparently but I can't recall what the error message was. I'll find out tonight and run it past you.

The frustrating thing is that the first 2 videos I edited on Pinnacle (after recently installing it on my new PC) were perfect!!!! After I posted this last night the situation has got worse. Pinnacle is now telling me that the file has "no audio" although when you play it in "Windows Media Player" it certainly does!!! The file that I am trying to edit is a copy of a DVD I made on my Panasonic DVD recorder off a Mini DV Camera. The type of file is a VOB.

Last night at about midnight I downloaded a 30day trial of "Ulead" to see if that would work. It won't accept VOB!!!!!!! You don't happen to know of a good free converter?

AAAARRRRGGGHHH!!!

Roger, that program doesn't seem to support VOB.

Danny. The video plays fine on the computer until after I try to edit it in the "Pinnacle" software.

I think I have solved the problem!!! I have just imported one of the videos direct off the DV camera and the sound quality is fine. It therefore must be a problem with this VOB file format that is on the DVD that I burned. I will now upload all of the videos again. Thanks to Craig and Roger for you help.

Gary,

I didn't know Pinnacle would handle a VOB file properly?? although I use Studio 9 so may be different to "DV" so I may be wrong

There are various programs available to convert VOB files to MPG or AVI that will work in Pinnacle

Or you may have corrupted or damaged codecs, and that could be the cause

I have done a lot of videos with Pinnacle and always found the best way to get decent results from it, is to capture from the camera as either full DV quality or the top MPEG quality, then when creating files for uploading I always found the .wmv output is best.

The clip you uploaded of my car has the sound and video tracks out of sync, that could be caused by accidental dragging of one or other track, if you are using the "timeline" view, or again by a dodgy codec.

Pinnacle have some forums on their website that can be useful for finding answers to problems like this, which is just as well as it can be very buggy software,
especially all new releases,
Pinnacle has a history of releasing unfinished products on the public, then seeing what goes wrong before releasing endless updates to fix it

sounds like the conversion from DV to DVD may have encoded the audio in such a way it can't be re-encoded to something else. Still have original MiniDV tape around?

I always dowload the DV from the cam via firewire and edit using that then I can encoded down into a few different size mpeg files, one for posting/e-mail, a bigger one for viewing and the original for archiving. Saying all that I haven't done any vids since my daughter was born two years ago. The wife is on my back...still haven't done the wedding video from about 5 years ago...

Craig

Geez..you guys posted while I was typing..ignore above

I think that it obviously does not like VOB files, Mark.
Valuable lesson. I will download all of my video onto the computer direct from the camera in future.

Just checked Studio DV should definitely be OK with VOB files

Their support site is here http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/a ... r+Support/

I think they have an email/chat section.

Just another thought to try, the VOB file isn't from a DVD created in NTSC format is it? or is Pinnacle setup in NTSC and the DVD is PAL??
I once had problems getting sound when I was trying to capture from a PAL camera in NTSC mode

Just some ideas
