cossie T5 query

g'day folks,

Thinking about 5 speeds and I had a thought. Quaife do a close ratio semi helical gear kit to suit the cossie T5 https://shop.quaife.co.uk/ford-sierra-c ... fe-gearkit The ratios look good, I like the idea of the semi helical cut for a quieter box in a tarmac rally car that is loud enough to almost warrant shouting even with an intercom (conversation almost impossible without helmet in transport) and unless anyone can comment otherwise i believe it will be stronger than a Type 9 with straight cut gearkit anyway with better syncro design.
What I am also hoping, and here in lies another advantage of this route, that I can pick up a cheap local falcon etc box and by fitting this kit which includes the correct input shaft have it suit my car without too much fuss (other than different bellhousing and shorten prop shaft a tad. I know shifter position is a little different but happy to modify the tunnel and a longer length suits my seating position anyway.

So my question is, can anyone familiar with T5's and the cossie variants comment on if this sounds feasable? i.e are there any sneaky differences between your run of the mill world class T5 gearbox.... I believe the cossie was a world class variant??? (anyone confirm) and the cossie box that might make this kit not suitable to fit to a non cossie box like the cheap as chips falcon or commodore variants?

Might be an option compared to the dwindling availability of type 9's and everyone thinking their worth 1500 these days!

cheers,
Llewellyn

I have in mind that sierra t5 and other t5's are different enough. Just a vague recollection, so don't take it as certainty.

Starter / flywheel need some sorting.

Hi,

I have my race T5 box for sale. It's a Ford based world class T5 with a G-Force gear set with upgraded main shaft, upgraded main case, upgraded bearing retainers etc. Recently rebuilt with new synchros. Best shifter you can buy (http://www.ripshift.com/rip_ford.html). Comes with concentric slave cylinder.

The ratios are similar to Quaife ones.

You'll need a bell housing to suit your application and may need new clutch plates to suit spline of input shaft. Various length input shafts available from G-Force at affordable price.

Won't find a stronger synchro box.

Call if interested.

Cheers,

Mike.

Thanks Scott, I know eurospeed are an option. They are pretty expensive though for something I'm happy to do myself, the fitting/rebuilding side of things that is. And given that, and my rough calculations show a built T5 will be about the same coin as a built T9 It just seemed the T5 might end up a superior box.

JSA, Thanks mate would love to hear from anyone else who might know too.

Mike it seems I might have a lead on something else but may give you a buzz if it doesn't work out.

After doing more reading the only thing I can find is that the Cossie box may have a slightly different bearing between the input shaft and main shaft, and is possibly the same as what's known as the T5z which is a "competition" variant of the box. If that were the only difference then that shouldn't be a problem.

Surely someone out there has some experience with the cossie boxes?

They're not (too) different.

The Sierra is not a T5Z.

It's a WC T5. Essentially they're the same as every other T5. The only things that can be different is the rear housing/selector rods (interchangeable and looking at online photos appear the same as Australian Ford based T5), input shaft length/spline (again can be interchangeable and changing the splines of the clutch plates is simple and will probably increase range of plates available to you and the ratios.

In relation to the ratios you probably want to choose the most suitable to your application. As soon as you change the torque and power, wheel/tyre size from original the original gear ratios are now irrelevant. The diff ratio is also relevant.

Don't get suckered into paying for a Sierra T5. If you're putting a gear set in it then the casings are identical and I wouldn't spend more than $50 from the wreckers because the casings are the same!

You will need a bell housing but I bet they used one from several other models/other manufacturers.

Chasing $2500 for mine. The shifter is $500 alone. A reconditioned road box sells for around $1500 so it's a bargain at that price.

Only reason for sale is because I'm upgrading to Holinger.

Regardless forget the T9 and stick to T5.

Don't think you have to get Quaife stuff either. The T5 sold in hundreds of models in America and there is a number of gear kits available...

I can add the cosworth Sierra box I have had a different input shaft bearing retainer to other world class boxes. I purchased a tilton hydraulic bearing kit which replaces the bearing carrier and thrust bearing shaft. the bellhousing needed machining out to fit the new carrier which was guaranteed not to be necessary.
Probably doesn't mean much but hey?

Hey folks, sorry for the tardy response,

Danny, as usual when your not actually helping.... your not helping  making me want things even more than I do already is causing me a great deal of stress right now. I had considered the HZF but it's a choice where you either spend money on life.... or all of it on race cars. I've spent enough on race cars the past year or two and I want to do a few things to my unit and a holiday is due with the missus. And my other one and only goal is targa Tas next year or at the latest 2017, for which the price of the Hollinger pays for!! I'm choosing the experience over the gear right now.

Crusey and JP thanks for the info it's much appreciated. I think I have found a good option at a fair price, will let you know in a week or so hopefully. Otherwise I may still give you a buzz Crusey about your box.

I must say too, in my searches it seems the old type 9 is not too easy to find these days. Except the ones people seem to think are worth a million bucks, it's been a good exercise in the whimsical and unrealistic nature of people having no realistic idea of what their s**t is really worth (a second hand standard T9 is not worth $1500 people!! you can personally import two from pommie land including freight for that!!). This is one of the primary reasons I was looking at other boxes too.

Well, almost went the dog box route but ended up with a synchro Quaife HD type 9 with alloy case. Price was too good to pass up!

Looking at the front layshaft stub that necessitates modifying the bellhousing to accommodate it, there is some webbing in the bellhousing there that would need cutting. Has anyone modified a steel bellhousing to suit or only used an alloy one? It doesn't look to me like there would be any issue, but i'm here now so thought id ask in case anyone else had.

Cheers,
Llewellyn

I didn't bother with a cast iron housing due the their tendency to crack whilst standard and would only get worse once you've milled a dirty great big hole in it. So I did it with an original Ford alloy housing which was fine until the H6S killed it with it's tailshaft problems
