2 very different places, 2 very different car scenes.
The first 'big' show I was at in england, I was immediately struck by the quality, and numbers, of MK1/2 escorts, not to mention other small fords. However you soon begin to realise, these cars are nearly all built to the same formula....
In the UK, aftermarket support is huge. There is a catalog and bolt on part for pretty much everything. This and the 'thats the way it is done, or keep it old skool' attitude, does one thing.... It near kills innovation, ideas and progression. Whilst initially stunning, walking by your 3rd of 4th row of mk1 escorts that are ALL lowered on either lotus steels or RS wheels with either (A), a crossflow on webers, (B) a pinto on webers or C a Cosworth just gets well, plain boring.
Lack of available parts here in oz means we have to experiment and innovate just to keep or cars on the road, and as for motorsport applications, we use what we can get.
While the Uk guys are just starting to look at stuff like volvo axles, we have toyata, BW, mazda and nissan options. Our brake setups are too numerous to mention, toyata boxes, toyota inserts, and multiple strut tops, the list goes on and on..... engine conversions, where do I start?
Track cars over there are built to different regulations than here, especially in reagrds to suspension mds and pickup points. Not many are on leafs so comparisons are difficult. They're also used to racing on damp tracks...
As for 'street' engines, sure, your average street going pinto or crossflow might make more power over there, however that is always going to happen with the aftermarket support and experience of the amount of local (garage) builders. I would bet most of your average so called engine builders here couldn't tell you what a kent, pinto or essex was...
That being said however, we do have quite a few specialized 'race' engine builders and they are making as much as and in many cases MORE than the uk guys...
And I dont need to mention the over inflated horse ponies of england
If you want to see the same old formulas, head over, or pick up a copy of your local english small ford mag.
If you want to see progression, innovation and thinking outside the box, , get down to a club day and have a walk around the pits.

Well said Shaun. One reason I stop buying English Classic Ford magazine, same crap everytime does get boring after 30 years. Flip side to that is in Australia, guys with say.. a Jap motors in a small Ford gets handed a lot of crap for their install.
A Escort with a Toyota, Nissan, or even a rotory motor will get hung on forums, and shows, plus the owner has to put up with crap talk from most closed minded people. Yet, most of the same people dishing out the crap will, or would've had a Jap gearbox, diff or some other Japanese part or component on their own small Ford.
