Are these the callipers for the Volvo Brake Upgrade?

Hi Guys,

My cousin gave me these as they were sitting under his house for 5 years and I want to know are these the callipers required to fit the BMW / Laser TX3 disks for the Volvo brake upgrade?

Also where do you get the rebuild kit for the callipers and what part number is it?

Have had a look on the bendix website and the DB549 padds are 98 x 60 x 16 mm so that pretty much confirms I have the right ones.

The pistons appear to have a diameter of 30mm with an internal one of about 26mm.

Thaks to all those for their input.

Can anyone out there help me to get them slotted and also to modify the hub? Can pay in cash or beer?

Whats the distance between pads when installed and pistons fully retracted.

Vented rotors start at 20mm thick.

Solids are 12mm ?

I don't have a piston compresser but it looks like they will retract to leave a gap of about 40mm or so.

If you take out the pad width of 16mm (for the Bendix DB549) that should leave 24mm so the vented rotors should fit.

What rotors were you referring to as I was planning on using the lasre TX3 rotors as apparently you don't need to modify the hub to make them fit. Just redrill the holes.

They look like the Girling calipers; should have 1.5" pistons not 30 mm. You need to remove them to check or otherwise you could be measuring incorrectly across the boot seat.

They are solid disc calipers from an early so won't take discs over about 12 mm.

They will need bridge spacers to fit vented discs.

They have dual inlets which you must cross drill or they won't work properly.

1.5 to 2.0 mm each side and 2.0 mm radial clearance is what you want for fitup.

Well, they looked like series one volvo units but I never know.

Now we do.

144 to 165 volvo..


.....................so these will fit the STD escort rotor, not a ventilated one.

I doubt your insurance company would like you using these [modified] on public roads.

Does anyone have any pics of how to cross drill the calipers in order to use just the one brake hose?

Yes, I have the rebuild kit.

I know I have to break them open but have heard on various sites that this is not recommended as they can have resealing issues once back together again.

I have done a couple of sets and neither have leaked. Most people use a long shanked drill down through the brake line hole to bridge the gap. But have a look when you get the pistons out might be better option. Might be handy to attach some pics for others when finished.
