Theres a guy in Melb that converts standard Escort centre to LSD for around the $390 mark.
Just need to send him the centre.

If memory serves me correct, they are the Phantom Grip ones.

You buy the kit and install it in your own centre. From what I've heard, they don't work much better than an open diff. From what I've read I can't see it working properly anyway.

I just had a steel CNC machined Ford style LSD sent from UK.

Cost was around $1200 and looks very nice

for that price i wouldn't mind picking up one of those cnc machined lsd's myself.

are they worth it for a street performer? currently with standard mk2 rs 2000 rear suspension. i'd also be interested to know if anyone recommends an optimal ratio for this kind of application, or is the standard 3.54 sufficient?

I think they are worth it. As a young hoon, I went through 9 diffs in my Escort so this time around the $1,000 is not an issue and the bonus is better traction. Other forums have focussed on axles breaking but I'll only be running 185 X 13 tyres so I don't expect (hope) to bust too many axles. If I do, it will be driver error, not hardware failure.

I haven't fitted this yet but I'll be running a 3.77 in my mk1 with a 1600 (so same as Mexico). I'll possibly go to a 3.9 if not happy.

With the extra power and torque of a 2L, maybe 3.77 too? Depends if you want top end speed (boring) or quick acceleration (not boring)

Hiya All,

Just had a look at a site Roger posted on anther thread, and noticed the company was selling ATB & Plate LSD units.

Could someone please explain the pros & cons of each type with reference to road use.

I have a Quaife ATB in the road car and a Ford plate LSD in the race car. They both work but there are differences. The fact they are in that order is no accident.
The ATB is OK on the street but once you pick up an inside wheel the diff will allow that wheel to spin. How well it works will depend upon your rear suspension and what sort of driving you do. I understand they work better in IRS setups as these tend to keep both wheels on the ground better.
The ultimate is the Ford plate LSD. The advatage here is you can alter the degree of slip the diff allows, so it is suitable for any use from road to track. At the limit, it will still drive on one wheel when you have the other off the ground. An ATB won't do that.
As well, you can rebuild the plate diffs by just buying new clutch packs. I'm not sure you can do that with the Quaife's.
For my money, I'd buy the plate diff. But they both work better than no LSD at all, and they both are bolt in and seemless in operation.
