Escort Mk2 track car
Well Clayton your dads car is a credit to him I love the retro look more cars like this should be on the track to remember where motorsport come from. Darrin
Thanks Darrin When I started looking around for mods to do on the 4.0L, I stumbled across Fordsix.com. Ended up putting a build thread on there if you're interested. Clayton
Great build thread Clayton. Your Dad and yourself are very talented fabricators, Love the webers instead of efi. Hope I one day get to see and hear it in person. Darrin
Well, hasn't time flown, been nearly a year. The Escort is in moth balls this year, haven't touched a thing on it. Need to finish a major project before the August deadline. Will be back out next year and hopefully Zetec powered soon after.
The old mans car is finished and has done 2 meetings so far. A few issues along the way, but nothing that can't be sorted. Here's a few videos
Mate you and your dad have built a nice car. Sounds great bet the low down torque of the engine makes it easy to drive not having to keep the engine buzzing in a small power window. Have you had a drive to compare it's cornering grip to your Escort.
Thanks Darrin No, not yet, waiting for him to get it out of his system first. This month was the last meet until the end of the year. June is the V8's, then they are going to resurface the track. So bit of a break for both of us. It should stick quite nicely with the 225 & 275 Hoosier R6's, 860kg total wet weight (over engineered...) and a 49.5/50.5% F/R weight. Cant wait for a blat
Well, it’s been awhile since I last posted and even longer in driving it. She was put into mothballs for well over a year while I finished off another project. Now that’s done, its time to give her a little upgrade. Nothing too fancy at this stage. As they don’t make AO50’s in 13’s, had to upsize to 15’s, which means I can put bigger brakes in. Re-ring the engine, build up a new head, rebuild the gearbox and fit a better radiator.
Located an injected head and started with that. It has a much better short turn radius, but a lot flatter port angle compared to the std head. After researching port diameters and running the numbers through ‘Pipe Max’, came up with a min dia of 36.5mm to suit my engine specs. Std as cast dia is around 38mm. So the solution was to sleeve the port down and lift it at the same time. Didn’t want to get too aggressive on the angle and hit water, so ended up at 11 degs. Machined out the valve throats at the same time.
Apart from the sleeves, it received a pretty std port job and bigger valves. Aluminium tubes were glued and pressed into the head, raising the port around 6mm at the flange. Milled 0.100” off the head to run mid 11:1 compression. Deepened the spring seats to reuse the hardware from the old head, as well as cam, followers etc. One disappointment was the valve lengths. I thought I ordered shorter valve stems, but still had to take a fair bit of the stems to regain the correct valve lift and wipe on the follower.
Clayton you just ruined the head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ports need to be bigger and you never ever touch the chambers as you can't get enough compression out of them standard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for your words of encouragement Danny The ports will be fine for the small cam and low rpm I'm running (it still has factory std rods and pistons). Aiming to keep the port velocity up around the 260 fps. Absolute minimum has been taken from the chambers and the old head had 11.4:1 with similar work done. I'll find out once its been back across the same dyno.
The ports are too small!!!!!!! For any cam!!!!! Exhaust ports need to be bigger still and what stroke are you using to get 11.4 and how far out of the block are the pistons
As for the manifold, always hated the large dog leg on #1 Decided to make a manifold with straight runners. Started with 1.5" S/S tubes and made a mandrel to stretch them out to 45mm ID at the carb end and 36.5mm ID at the head flange, with an 80mm centreline (same length as the old manifold). Plus plates to suit the webers.
