Anglia tough diff
Gidday, Am presently fitting a 200HP Zetec engine to a 105E Anglia. It is the owners pride and joy as a weekend toy, the only hard work for it will be drag racing but I fear he will still want it as road car. I am trying to made it super reliable using a Steel case Celica gearbox. Now for the diff, I am open to polite suggestions, narrowing can be done and would like an LSD as opposed to a CIG locker, also a unit that has high numerical ratios avaiable. Thanks in advance, Les.
Hi Lux is way too heavy, quite bulky for tunnel clearance and power sapping for a little light NA like the Angular. They also end up being far more expensive than people would like to admit. They do however cope with quite high torque.
A better bet would be the diff from a Mazda. An R100 or possibly a Capella housing could be used. They use 24 spline axles, have a carrier that is common across many models and a wide selection of ratios. There are also relatively cheap LSD's available. These diffs are used reliably behind NA rotaries with up to 300hp.
Les just fit an english axle with some piece axles like the Quaife ones and get yourself a decent Lsd like the TranX or Lotus Cortina spares one with a decent quality CWP and pinion and it will be fine with 200hp
Thanks for the replies. Certainly I want to keep the weight down. So I direct this to Danny, what Australian car is source for an English diff, Capri V6 maybe ? Once this is etablished I can do my own rescearch into available items ex UK. As for the Mazda route, are Capella type diffs still available and how good are there axles? I have no qualms re engineering a diff and I agree completely about the weight. Weight added is power lost.
Don't go Hilux. I've got one with all the gear and it's good (still heavy) in my car, which has enough power to warrant it, similarly with cars like Danny's and others on here. But if you have 200hp you should be able to get the English axle to be reliable. If and it's a big if, you can't - then upgrade.
Then if you do upgrade there are other options then Hilux.
Gary I really think its the wrong advice you're giving. I bet if you took your car back to English axle it would go faster!
No Michael, best 14kgs I ever gained. Remember I was doing more than 100 standing starts per year and I was sick of having to regularly check and replace the axles due to twisting. I now don't expect to take an axle out of my car for a very long time. I did it purely for reliability and lack of hassle. I suggested it because Les wanted lots of ratios and mentioned DRAG racing, pretty stressful on an English diff I would have thought. I don't actually make any money out of recommending the Hilux

14 kg's? In the center alone? Using your scales your car must weigh 700 kgs!
I appreciate all these standing starts you do - but what did you consider prior to the upgrade?
As Marcus correctly indicates there is more to fitting them then simply shortening one.
I don't remember saying you gained anything from it personally - but its the plain wrong advice. Escorts have been hill climbed with good Pinto's for 30 years with English axles - and to advise people on here that it is the "obvious" choice is in my opinion wrong.
I weighed both housings with centres fitted on the same set of scales and 14kgs it was!! I apologise for the use of the word "obvious" but I don't think my advice was "wrong"

You probably won't get much change from $3k if you go the KAAZ diff in a hilux where as to put a Trans X LSD in an escort with Quaife axles you'd probably get change from $2k.
I'm with Danny and Crusey, Hilux option not needed, just decent stuff in the std type housing.
The Hilux option isn't as cheap as people make it out to be (they tend to forget about the fitting costs, mahining, shortening etc), and the std type LSD fitted is rubbish.
I have fitted the standard English Anglia axle in my 105E Anglia with a Tran-X LSD centre, standard halfshafts, Fiesta Discs and Sierra calipers as well as 5 linking it. This was the advice from Milton Race who are the experts in everything Anglia. I will also be running a 2.0 litre Zetec on 45s.
10kg and 14 kg weight penalty from two trusted sources - I would be happy with that for some peace of mind in the reliability dept. So who has been using a 4wd housing to have such a large weight difference? (or dodgy scales!!)
