Baden's RS

Postby Baden » Tue Oct 11, 2011 1:49 pm

Okay, so it looks like we will get a run in the Alpine this year, assuming we comply with Classic Rally Car regs. An issue seems to be that the control arms for the 5-links are mounted ahead of the furthest-most mounting point of the original suspension, unless it was homologated differently. It seems Group 4 homologated the 5-link, and the pictures are a bit unclear. I have "The Works Escorts" book and it has a drawing of "the anatomy of an RS1800" and that seems to show it being forward, so I think I should be fine. The only other potential issue is that I have an additional rod attached to the panhard rod to keep the mount from twisting which is not in the homologation papers. Also, given that I'm not an RS1800, I'm assuming the Group 4 papers cover my RS2000....

We have decided to up the grunt a bit and have dropped the old engine out and are about to insert a new one. This one will do until I find a good injection head and do it properly with 48s. We're also getting the original rocket box checked over and the dampers all need some work: weeping happening. Apart from that, she just really needs some TLC. There is some great strengthening work underneath, it just looks nasty at the moment. Sorry you have to see her like this Paul: at least we're giving her some attention now. I'll keep you updated on our progress and then how things go down south :)

IYK was built to Grp 4 spec and the links are forward of the spring hanger this is how they were built
with slippers there is the debate about the Mk1 it was built with shorter link arms
hope this helps

Thanks Ted - it's funny: the mk2 Cortina is now fully prepared but the RS is getting all the attention! The mk2 is still sporting a pretty standard engine so once that's sorted she might see some action. In the mean time Dad is having a ball using it as his daily driver :)

Here's a pic of it at Warwick doing a sprint series round about a month ago - pushing it to the limit but suffering from a lack of horsepower (my mk1 is about 10 seconds a lap faster than it). This pic is from Darren at DigitalRealism - excellent supporter of motorsport at Warwick.

Yeah Steve - looked a bit out of place amongst the circuit cars! But heaps of fun nonetheless :)

Looks good Ted! Where was that?

I see she's getting a run in the Alpine again this year - at least there are a couple of Cortinas: three if my Dad's mate Ken MacDonald gets a run in his mk2 (he's #130 on the list....)

was down at the Haunted Hills Hillclimb near Moe in Victoria.
yes the alpine entry is in and have been working on the car for a couple of months. There is a thread running on the Mk1 Cortina forum, basically a big rewiring job and a type 9 conversion. If we have time it might even get a fresh coat of Paint

Ken should get a run as there are usually a few dropouts.
We must catch up over the weekend

All action stations now. Billies are being reconditioned, new clutch on order, bonnet repainted, general cleanup, gearbox checked, and new engine ready to install: bulletproof bottom end and hopefully the head will produce some goodness. We need to get out and do some testing....

C'mon Ted, you should be working on the car until at least midnight the night before the event. You must be getting soft. :)
Colin and John are still preparing IYK.
Back on subject, sorry to hear you're not running Baden.
Cheers Peter

The tarmac conversion has worked a treat and we had a ball at Targa high Country last year.

I've attached a few pics :)
