I thought that my cooling and missfire issues were due to a blown head gasket, although things never seem to work out as planned.

Notice the crack inbetween cylinders one and two ?



Why and how could have this happened ? It's not a big power car. I had the short motor assembled by my engine builder 6000kms ago.

I beleive Ty had new liners fitted by bryant engineering not long before he sold it to me as well..

I guess i am looking for another block ?
No matter how good I have been this year I don't think santa is going to put a new block under the tree for me!

Thermal expansion stress, not enough meet left after the sleeves were installed.

The head and block expand at different rates, and the inlet and exhaust sides would be different temps.

Can only think sleeves triggered the problem.

Starting to wonder if interference fit of the sleeve to the block is too much, stressing the block between cylinders enough to split the iron.

Yeah, well as it turns out that is not where they usually crack.. so i would dare say you are correct in saying that.

I am in the midst of a big shed clean out and I came across this block again. Is it with keeping / selling or should I just chuck it in the bin?

I remember reading about this issue somewhere a long time ago, the sleeves need to be size for size and loctited rather than interference fitted which creates a ticking time bomb. They are then retained by a step under the sleeve and a slight(very slight)step above the deck height clamped by the head which effectively becomes like a wire ring. That should still be achievable with that block. There are also some special stitch type crack repair systems about now.
