Alloy sump repair

Hey guys,

I just filled the sump for the first time in five years and it appears to have a hairline crack on the corner near where the clutch cable goes through.
I can't actually see it but oil is weeping out. Can anyone suggest some sort of epoxy etc that I can use as a temporary fix, at least to get it to the dyno.

Cheers,

Cam

I personally would not use an epoxy or most other type "filler" materials if you want to be able to weld it properly later and even then I would be be soaking it for a day or two in a solution like CT18 and water to draw out as much oil out of the material around the crack so you can weld it properly and not have dramas later

cam ,
i am serious when i say soap( a blob of soft gooey stuff out of the shower) , used plenty of times on diesel fuel tanks
it wont realy contaminate the crack before welding
you will have to heat the crap out of it & clean it out anyway before welding
cast alloy is very porous , the oil actualy soaks in to it
another good method is use some epoxy ribbon ,, knead it together type stuff you
normaly see in auto shops
the trick is to clean it realy well , methylated spirits for the final clean
then thumb the stuff on & get some heat in to it (heat gun )
it wont penetrate the crack but seal around it !
talking about "pentrating Cracks "" ???
oops i better not go there , i might get moderated ...

Thanks Steve, I thought about trying soap but decided in the end to just get it off and try to weld it. soapbox.gif

I've got the engine slung up already and if my helpers arrive tonight I'll drop the cross member and do it that way. (Where's the fingers crossed smiley  )

Danny, what is this CT18 solution you speak of and where am I likely to find it?

Sump welded and refitted.

I've just been trying to get the oil pressure up using my 18v cordless drill on the pump drive, which I haven't done before.

It spun freely for a few minutes then the drill really started to struggle.

Just to see what was going on I put a quarter drive ratchet on the end and it turned but with a lot of resistance. When I let go of it, it spun backwards.

Is this a good sign or a bad one?

Thanks Danny.

Despite my best efforts, I often manage to stuff things up. So yes, I do worry a bit.

This is why I only lasted 3 years as a mechanic. Luckily, I turned out to be a good salesman.
