Hi all

i remember in the past reading that a z9 oil filter will fit a pinto? is this still correct or was it a rumour? if so are they worth while using over the normal filter as they are bigger etc?

Cheers
Matty

I was using Z9 on my Hilux diesel but was warned off them as they are not quite correct for the oil pump, they need more pressure etc..on a pinto it could also apply, best to be 100% sure about this.

Z9 [equivalent] fits easy, even with cooler adapter [obscured]

Z9 [length] is in between these 2, but without high flow.

So what would the best oil filter be for the Pinto out of these choices?

After buying a filter cutter I've gone back to using a genuine Ford AFL1 filter which the z9 is based from

Is this the filter you're using Danny?

They are a good filter and probably would use it if I was running a wet sump still with 100% of the oil pressure running through it but because I have been running a spin on on the return line just before the tank it would barelly see half the pressure so I've gone back to the regular AFL1's and Gary with my old pinto is using them as well without any hiccups but he's not running the old 50W Pennzoil "grease" that I used to run so it's pressure capabilities isnt a big demand as the pressures in the filter with a thicker poor flowing oil are so high that the risk of them needed the blow off is real but with modern ester synthetics thee isn't the issue
As an added note I even hada FRAM Competition filter bolw off and bypass on the dry sump return when I started off using the Pennzoil Racing 50

I'm not looking to highjack the thread, but I'm checking alternatives to the Ryco Filters (Z9 or Z89A). I'm looking at the K & N Equivalent and the main reason for this is the nut on the end of it makes it easier to swap (use a spanner/socket vs hanging off the filter with an oil filter strap on a lazy Sunday afternoon and teaching the kids new words).

Concern is the size differentials quoted from the web pages - but I'm assuming provided the thread size and seal at the same, then all is OK? I'd welcome any feedback or ideas. Car is a (fast?) road car. Both K & N Filters appear to be the same spec.

Z89A
Height Overall 99.00mm
Seam Diameter 94.00mm
Seal Diameter 70.00mm
Thread 3/4-16-UNF-2B

Part HP-1009 (K & N) - Z89A Equivalent (?)
Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes
Bypass Valve: Yes
Height: 3.406 in (87 mm)
Outside Diameter: 3.625 in (92 mm)
PSI Relief Valve: 11-17
Removal Nut: Yes
Thread Specification: 3/4 In - 16UNF-2B

Part Z9
Height Overall 139.00mm
Seam Diameter 94.00mm
Seal Diameter 70.00mm
Thread 3/4-16-UNF-2B

Part HP-1009 (Z9 Equivalent)
Anti Drain Back Valve: Yes
Bypass Valve: Yes
Height: 3.406 in (87 mm)
Outside Diameter: 3.625 in (92 mm)
PSI Relief Valve: 11-17
Removal Nut: Yes

Just found out that Ford still sell a suitable long life oil filter which is a derivative of the EFL 90, and is now called an AFL 5071 MC, not cheap but is listed for the 2.0L Transit motor. FYI.

From all reports, the original AFL1 is now just overseas rubbish, the same as a Ryco Z9. Made in Indonesia.

If you still want to use a Ford filter, the AFL1HP (which was the old original Ford high performance filter) is now replace by D9AZ6731A (FL1A is also a number quoted, same filter) which is available from any Ford dealer is Australia. They may not keep it on the shelf, but it is no big deal to get (or shouldn't be)

I am still using a K&N HP3001 for the moment, no issues
