hi guys, i know its not a ford but a few people on here might be interested in this build. i will give u a bit of backround on the car. the car is a 1990 bmw e30 318is. i have always been into racing as my dad use to rally so iv have spectated at heaps of hillclimbs and sprints. in early 2010 after having to car for 8 months i decided to have a go at mt cootha hillclimb so i bought a set of coilovers and 15x8s and off i went. after this i caught the bug. i added a full exhaust, 4.11 lsd, hd clutch, lightweight flywheel, omp fixed back seat. rpm harness and stripped the interior. after winning a few events i wanted to increase to power so i looked around and found a 2.5 m3 motor in the states and purchased it in spetember. after racing at noosa in november a few people told me i should look into getting a roll cage as if i was to have a crash at speed i was going i could be in a bit of trouble. so that goes on the list of things to do. my best times so for are 49.7 at mt cotton and 64.3 at noosa. so now i am going to respray the car, fit the engine and get a good roll cage.
i picked up my new 2.5 m3 motor today so over the next few weeks i shall be installing it and getting it up and running. here are the specs. 2.5L sport evo bottom end VAC motorsport stage 2 head 284/276 cams cf airbox 48mm individual throttle bodies baffled oil pan previously dynoed at 204rwhp
Here is a list of parts i need to get the thing running radiator - already got onto pwr coolant hoses - samco sport hose kit new subframe - current one is a little bent gearbox x-member instrument cluster full exhaust new ball joints non power steering rack out of a e36 m3 oils - royal purple tune - any advice for who to go to would be appriciated
there proberly alot more things to do but thats all i can think of for now. on with the pics
this is what it will hopefully look like when i have finished
got some presents today. fitted the wheel, boss and quick release. i lowered the colume about 1cm which is just enough for now but it will have to go heaps lower when i solid mount the seat. ordered some parts as well which should be turning up soon.
Update!!! ok so I decided to get a new car as the battle damage on the red car (from extra curricular activities) was going to cost over a grand to fix. a guy at work is selling a 84 model e30 without sunroof and next to no rust for $400, so i bought it. good news with this is i will now go into the 'classic' improved production rules. i have taken holidays at the end of april so i will swap over the rear springs, shocks, diff, front coilovers, control arms, seat, wheel and other little bits and pieces. then i will send the car off to get the guards and floor modified. after that i will fit the motor and gearbox and get it running. hopefully have all that done by about mid july when the cage will be made and throw on some paint. a few more things arrived today - radiator, rear subframe bushes, diff bush and rear control arm bushes. also got another pic of the seat/wheel combo. so all this shall be enough to keep me busy and unfortunately a spectator for awhile (feel ur pain gary). on with pics
not as crazy as it sounds, just need a bit of plate welded in to make where the seat mounts flat because im going to be sitting a little bit further back. and i will be keeping this one under a car cover or maybe in the garage if dad lets me lol
evening all i went out to lakeside on trusday to race in the timeattack series. was pretty good fun apart from the fact I only got 4 dry laps in. ended the day with a 66.2 but i reacon with more track time i could get it down to a low 65. also found out the going flat under the bridge in semi-dry conditions doesn't work. i slid across the grass, back onto the track then back off again and bounced off the wall. lucky for me not much damage. mirror is scratched, rear bar is badly scratched, front lip is cracked, lower control arm is bent (lh front wheel pushed back about 10mm) and guard behind the wheel is pushed in. kept racing for the rest of the day with the steering wheel not centred lol all in all was a great experience and cant wait to get back there! oh and i pick up my in car tomorrow...
well done glenn , with your attitude have you ever considered a career in rally driving ????? you seem to have a smile & never say die persona !! good to see you giving the german gemini a good thrashing
Yep, I reckon Kingy's got it right. You know you enjoyed it, bounced off the scenery and went back for some more. Sump guard and a couple more inches ground clearance I say!
OK so i picked up my new car today. already taking all the interior out, most of the engine bay stuff (apart from the engine) and cleared out the boot. next step is a get all the body deadner off and take the dash and wiring out. then its time for cleaning.
A nice straight early 2dr (chrome bumpers) and an auto as well which might improve your driving . These are going real cheap these days for a solidily built German car that was probably worth 40k new! Nice pick up grt, is it silver or white?
