A kiwi MK1 rebuild
Well I have been doing some soul searching and with a sad heart I have decided to change the drive train from a 1600 and I have purchased a 2.0 pinto with a type 9 box. The reason is simple, cost, 711m rebuilders are fetching big dollars and i have been able to source a running pinto complete with box for half what the 1600 was going to cost alone. So here is what I am thinking, a nice warm 2.0 for the road and a second strong race motor for track work. I pick up the first engine this coming weekend so will post some pics on the blog next week. Peter
I have also located a rear cut so I am going down to look at it this weekend so if it is ok I will buy it and use it to replace what is needed for the back. I will also replace the boot floor mine was cut to fit a droptank in but I want to put in a alloy tank under the rear parcel shelf to give me more usable boot space. The engine that I picked up has aparently recently been rebuilt so it may well go in "untouched" to get the old girl mobile I will then work on the handling before putting more power into her peter
Well I had another good score yesterday I managed to get my hands on a new large gearbox tunnel for about half what they cost retail. I am picking it up this morning so I am rapidly getting together all the bits I need to keep this project alive so onwards and upwards Peter
Hi all I have returned from Tauranga with a rear cut and a couple of strut tops so I now have some panels to carry on with. I also found a guy who has more escort parts than you can imagine if you are needing anything pm me and I will put you in touch with him. As for photos I keep the photos on 1 computer but I generally log in on a different one (work) so I dont have photos available. I will try to get some up at somestage meantime just click on http://mk1escortrebuild.blogspot.com/ Cheers Peter
I have cut the rear cut into sections and the bits i need have been sent to get stripped so the any repair that is needed can be done before I fit them the rest I have put into storage. Other that that I have taken the car off the rotisserie until I repair the rear and front quarters. the underside of the central floor has been finished and I have put patched into the front corners of the boot drip rail a small patch in the left and a larger section in the right. So things are progressing slowly. Peter
Speaking of one piece at a time A good amount of progress at the weekend I cut out the R/R corner and have fitted the new panel and (although I do say so myself) it looks allright. When you consider that I am an enthusiast and learning as I go my skills are getting better. They do say that practice improves things and lets face it when it comes to welding I am getting lots of practice in on this girl. I just looked at the blog and it looks like some of the photos did not load so I will redo them tonight when I get home. once I have finished this side ( I still have a bit of welding to do and then I can refit the bubble arch) I will need to do the same to the L/H side I will need to remove the rear corner and fit the replacement part then I will start on the front. This is going to be a lot more involved as I have a number of issues ( rust, bent panels, lots of patches, new front panel, new lower radiator support, strut tops) the list goes on and on. Thats all for now Peter
Hi all I have acheived a small amount but I have located a possible rust free shell so if I can get it at a good price I may do a reshell. the girl I am working on does have some good points but the rust is killing me I will see what happens when I go and look at the shell tonight
I have looked at the shell and as it is on a auction I have bid with a auto bid to what I am willing to spend to make reshelling worth while. So if I win all is good but if I lose I will continue with the rebuild. The shell is worth a lot more that what I am willing to pay and is set up to take a nissan sr20 engine and box so I am not sure if it will be mine yet. Time will tell the auction finishes on friday Keep your fingers crossed for me. (note to self must build a much bigger garage much much much bigger) Peter
I won the auction so am now the proud owner of a second mk1 project. This shell is in really good nick I will soda blast the whole thing transfer the cage from the old car to the new shell fit a atlas rear end into it and the pinto will provide the nellies. She will be more of a road car as it will be easier to get it road legal (the old car will get a new more integrated cage and will be targeted at racing) I will also get a set of Gartrac bubble arches for her and the glass ones will stay on the old car. will keep you informed on how things go peter
I will be posting more pics this coming weekend. I finally finished getting the last of the stuff from the auction last night. what I got was great, more alternators, starters, suspension parts, another english axle and a 711m long block (ok it is only a 1300 and needs a complete rebuild but it may suit someones needs) one of the scores is a front driveshaft yoke for a type 9 and a 2 peice driveshaft for an english axle. At the moment it is sitting off to the side of the drive under a tarp so until I tidy up the garage (I will start tonight) and move the old girl to a more conveniant location ( tied to the roof of the garage) I cant fit the new project in to the garage I will post more pics on here I promise Peter
