Had a good run last weekend at Morgan Park. We used the old 'long' track which I have never driven this car on before. Ended up with a best lap of 1:17.0 in the sprints on Sunday which is pretty much the same times as i was doing in dad's car a couple of years ago.
Hi Scott. Loving the car, its looking great for 2015. It's great seeing your developments along the way too.
I was just wondering about your fuel cell mountings (I just grabbed one and was starting to look at mounting it). I assume you just bolted it to the LHS rail (do those bolts poke out next to the chassis rail under the floor?), but the mounts on the boot floor, are they just bolts/washers through the floor? Or do they need something on the underside, like a spreader plate like you do with a harness bolt?
Thanks Pete, gotta stretch the memory way back to remember what I did there! The car's tucked away under covers at the moment so it's not too easy to get at. If I had to guess, I just used large washers to spread the load. The one's holding the black angle brackets to the floor were M6, and the ones through the tank feet were M8. I know the fuel pump and filter bracket is held in by nutserts, but i don't think i did that with the fuel tank. I'll see if I can get to the car in the next few days and have a look. It's done 3 seasons of racing sofar without any problems.
Thanks for the info so far Scott, it was a while ago that you played with these bits on the car. One other thing, did you run the braided fuel line all the way to the engine bay, or use the standard line, or rubber fuel hose?
The fuel line is 3/8 aluminium inside the cabin, along the transmission tunnel with AN bulkhead fittings at both ends. The rest is this stuff . It cuts with a stanley knife and doesn't tear the crap out of your fingers. A bit more expensive than stainless braid, but the usability of it makes it worth every cent.
In the engine bay, I used the 3/8 hose again to an inline gauze filter then 5/16 to the carbs. After 3 years use I checked the gauze filter and it was completely clean so the filter near the tank is doing a very good job.
Off to Morgan Park this weekend, giving the car a quick once-over and oil change. Nothing too out of place, just had to replace the exhaust manifold gasket, again. It's been a couple of years since I've driven the long track in this car, since then I've changed the exhaust and put in an alloy radiator so it will be interesting to see if there's been any improvement.
YEP nutserts are fine the 1st time you use them , seems easy till they either pull straight thru or spin if yu ever have to undo them , hope yu have a good cold chisel & pair of multigrip buthcher pliers , angle grinder or crowbar
There's 6 M6 steel nutserts holding it down. About 20L capacity. I'll let you know if it ever breaks loose.
Got some preliminary drawings for the cage. According to my interpretation of the rules it's OK, may have to lift the rear backstays up to in line with the front leg and forego the gussets.
