You probably think I am going mad, but this is happening with my RS2000

I get wheel shimy (violent steering wheel shake) ONLY on wet tracks.
It occurs when decelerating at lower speeds, but can be intermittent. It usually doesn't
occur under braking & all is fine when the track is dry.
There is nothing loose or worn in the suspension or steering.
It seems there is some resonance that occurs with low grip between tyre & road.

Why don't you try another wheel and tyre combo... To find a problem its a case of trial and error...

Most of the front end vibrations I've encountered have been caused by bad control arm ball joints or brake disc problems (warped or rust patches)

I had a weird one once. No amount of tyre balancing or wheel rotation (and I did plenty) got rid of a shake at exactly 100 kph - freeway speed. Then one day I bought new wheels and had reason to pull the old ones off and use my new torque wrench when tightening the new ones up. Wobble gone! I've since learned that incorrect torque on the wheel nuts leading to shake is a known problem with this particular model of car. It's a long shot, but try that if you haven't already.

Back in the day, when my Mk2 2L was only 3 1/2 years old, I used to get a shake up in the steering on wet pedestrian crossings at 60 or 80 kmh.As stated, bearings, balance ball joints all ok. Turned out to be the nylon cup in the steering rack were cracked

Could be wheel / tyre combo as I've read of this causing shimmy. Mine are 13x7'" hotwires with toyo R888.
It's not ball joints, wheel balance or wheel nut torque, but I guess could be something like cracked cup
in steering rack, athough rack is not very old. Don't think it's brakes as it's too intermittent.
Last weekend at WP it was terrible in the rain, then disappeared when the track dried.
