YB turbo in a 73' mk1 shell - any official class?
Hi all, I have a 1973 mk1, orignially 1300" which has been seam welded, strengthened, steel works arches, a YB turbo motor/T5 box, shortened Borg Warner LSD rear and a lot of other trick bits. Big 15" x 9" rear rims, big brakes, etc. I was looking through reams of regulations on CAMS, but I'm having a hard time working out if there are any classes of Motorsport I could run the car in, or if it is a track day only car. Anyone else campaigning an arched YB powered Cossie Mk1 in anything official? Cheers
From your description it sounds as though it would be improved production legal so far short of a restrictor for the turbo and 15 x 9. 15 x 8 are as wide as you can go.
Common Escort things that rule IP out may be: turreted rear, holes in rad support panel, bubble removed, extensive tunnel modification.
T5 and diff are both legal.
Don't let people talk you out of the restrictor. You can buy them for $250 - $450. With E85 and a safe tune will make all the power that you need and be reliable.
IP is a good class with good fields in each state, second only to NB/NC generally. Has a nationals event each year and most hill climbs have a class for them.
I'm biased because I run a car in IP so others might have a different view. But choosing a class will probably make your car more desirable for sale should you ever need to and makes your times more relevant.
Thanks crusey for your quick and helpful response. It does not have turrets, but runs tramp bars and a panhard rod, all rose jointed. The front has bilstein coil overs with r/jointed adjustable TCA on a wcxm and big (24mm I think) roll bar. From a suspension and wheel standpoint I should be ok. Only tunnel mods are for the T5 and the heater bubble is still there. The front panel is opened up though so that could be an issue possibly. Are turbo restrictors available off the shelf for stock T3's on the YB? Also, was planning on converting it to run a standalone ECU with motorsport features, but sounds like I better check that won't be a problem in IP class first. Thanks.
The restrictor is easy to fit and should be able to source one that bolts up with limited modification. The ECU and wiring is free in IP so you can run whatever you like. I've got Autronic and lots of people use Motec. You'd be crazy not to use E85 it makes a lot more torque and power generally at a lower engine temp. May require bigger injectors and higher than standard turbo compression. Good news is motor doesn't rev as hard and therefore bottom end will be less prone to N/A problems.
Panard bar and tramp bars are fine but the tramp bars must be bushed I believe. Panard bar or watts link can be rose jointed.
Not sure if that's great advice. The IP rules have remained static and my understanding is will so in the future so at least you know what they are and will be going forward. They also allow Escorts to be competitive in both under and over 2 litre configuration on a reasonable budget even if you claim the rules are stupid.
I'm not sure the same can be said for Tarmac rallying but haven't looked at running a car there for a while. Recently I was speaking to two current Escort campaigners who were not happy with rule changes that suit certain cars. And then there is the need for a support team of people at each event.
Having said that the car could also then be used at sprints, hillclimbs and track days but would most probably run as a sports sedan and be less competitive.
In my opinion on a limited budget a state based racing car appears better value for money, given the amount of events available to enter and the cost of each event. But it is horses for courses really.
WA IPRA is getting bigger this year particularly in U2L.
Best advice would be to go to as many various types of motorsport events and then decide. Your car sounds like with limited modification would suit a variety of forms/classes.
Iv'e done a fair bit of rule reading on classic rallying as that is where I would like to end up one day. And i'm not aware of any such tarmac events that would allow the cosworth head/turbo. It's all pretty much a stock block/head keeping within period thing it would seem these days. You may be able to wrangle it in some rare events perhaps but building a car that meets no rules with the intent of maybe running it if your very lucky is a bit pointless. Having said all this I have never been scrutineered at any such event or even participated, this is just what i have understood from reading all the rules and chatting to people. If anyone can prove me wrong i'd love to hear it, and hear from someone who has a YB head for sale
