Seat Bar Position
Looking to install my Gartrac seat bars but I do not have the seats bought yet nor know which ones I will buy.
Is there a set position for the seat bars between the inner sill and trans tunnel or are they specifically positioned to suit the seat and/or driver height? I want to install now before the cage but dont want to buy seats yet.
Also, I am 6'1" but my co-driver is 5'7". Am I likely to need two sets of seat bars or is it probable that the seat brackets will permit the necessary adjustment??????
you want the seats as low & as far back as the cage will allow you can always set the seats up and fwd from there . dont make the mistake of putting the main hoop too far fwd as this limits the seat posn with a bit of trickery you can get the pedals & steering wheel back a bit , if you have short arms & short legs
Putting some sort of spacers behind the pedal box would increase the leverage of the pedals and flex the firewall even more?
I plan to use a removeanle steering wheel so with that and a deep dish I dare say the wheel position will be ok (just hope it doesnt end up too high ).
Guess some extra bracing could still fix that though....
Also, do I need to buy the seat and/or brackets to know where to put the bars or can somebody give me some measurements???????
My experience with fitting seats is that theory gets you no where. You need to have the seat and mounts you plan to use, chock them up in the car with some timber or whatever you have laying around to an approximate height and sit your full weight in it (get someone to support the seat back while checking if you need to). Make adjustments until you are more or less happy with the driving position and this should give you an idea as to where to weld in your seat rails. You can fine tune the postion and seat angle later if your seat uses side mounts.
As for your Nav, as far back and down as possible - as long as they can still see the road ahead!
In my opinion, being comfortable is very important, especially if you are going to be sitting in the car for extended periods of time during a tarmac rally. In any case, my understanding is that most cage builders will want to know where your final seating position will be before they carry out any work.
Got 3 weeks until the car goes for the roll cage. Looks like I will have to break open the kids piggy banks and go buy a pair. I was hoping to wait until I could go to one place and buy everthing together ie
seats belts terratrip intercom helmets race suits gauges HANS? fuel tank steering wheel + quick release plumbed in fire extinguisher
I started another thread regarding which seats if anybody has suggestions although I suspect its a case of what feels good. I like the idea of a seat with wrap around head support for safety in a side impact.
Oz, i think you have come to the right conclusion but I believe the two most important things when building a car is wheels size and seat. build the rest of the car around these. Get the correct and right seat for your needs and comfort, get the best driving position with the seat in the right part of the car, inboard, low and as rearward as practicable, of course in an escort this means 10mm here and there thern build the cage around it, then the ancillaries like stering and pedals. When trying the seat in the car have the car as close to actual ride height, road level, bonnet and guards on and open the garage door, dont look at it from inside the car is it wont alow you to gauge how far ahead you can actually see. Pain in the ASS to remove from the racks/stands spits and balance the panels on but you spend all your time in the car in this seat, and if it is wrong at day one it will always be wrong. Plus have the cage built around the seat nont the inverse otherwise you will never fit in properly, or be too far forward or too high etc.
Agreed! This is one stuff up I made with mine. After painting (during assembly) I ended up cutting out my seat rails and welding in new rails and side supports to get my seat far enough back - made a bit of a mess of the interior and floor pan paint!
