Did the 4cyl 1969 ford Capri GT have a v4 or straight 4?
and were the corners of the engine bay triangulated at the firewall like on the v6 GT's?

I'm not sure if the V4 was a GT, I know the later model 1600 GT's were called XL's and they had the 2V Kent 1600's in them. As far as I'm aware, only the V6's had the triangular gussets, they also had 3 bolts per side on the engine x-member too.

Thanks Oz.
I didnt know about the 6 bolt xmembers thats news to me.
I know we had kent 1600 XL's wasnt sure we called them GT's tho'
And a guy in TAS had a v4 GT on carsales 2-3 years ago.
So all V6 GTs have triangled gussets and 6bolt xmembers and so far 4cyl GTs are unknown.
Just trying to make sure what Im buying is genuine GT 1969 vs this one alot cheaper very similar car not a gt tho' its got the v6 in it.

That one in the carsales ad is about 10k too expensive, the front guards have been hacked and it has a sunroof. Are you looking for a finished car? I know of a very straight base model 1600 that could still be for sale but it would need a complete rebuild. (It would make a great starting point for a group N car)

..and the original GT was rebadged the XL to get it away from the high insurance costs associated with the 'GT' badge (and to differentiate it to the new V6 model GT), so essentially they're the same.

Hi all,
Long time listener, first time caller.
The Australian 1600GT Capri only came with the 1.6l Kent straight 4cyl, and had either the close ratio 4sp manual or the BW35 auto. They don't have the triangular strengthening brackets in the rear corners of the engine bay, and they (like all 4cyl capris) had the 4 bolt crossmember (2 bolts each side).
They were primarily sold in 1969, with a small handful in early 1970. They lost the GT badging when the V6GT was released. From that time, they were sold as the 1600XL, which is essentially the same spec car without the GT identity.
A genuine 1969 1600GT will have a chassis number beginning with CK17J, and you'll find this in the engine bay stamped on the slam panel, directly behind the bonnet locking mechanism.
The V6s get more attention these days, but the 1600GT is still a great car. Getting harder to find a good one.
Cheers
Jamie
