Chasisis rails

Are the Chasisis rails under the floor mk2 escorts just welded on, or spot welded? I know the rails in the engine bay a spot welded.

Any advice in removing them without cutting out a good floor pan???

They're spot welded, everything is in an Escort.

To remove them you'll need to drill out the welds, but it's a PITA job. Just curious why you want to remove the rails and not the floor as usually you'd do it the other way around. At least drilling out the floor is easier because the metal is thinner.

The reason is I got given a 4 door Mk2 shell ( that is strait striped and primed no rust in the floors and auto tunnel, koni rear shocks and 2l front struts with king springs and anti dive) the guy that gave it to me was going to roll it on its roof and cut the rails out with a oxy for his Mk1 race car and scrap the rest so to save the panel work he gave it to me as but need to give him a set of front chassis rails!!! I don’t really need the shell whole just the panel work but the floors are pretty good and if I can save them I will/try

OK so you want the floor and someone else wants the rails - right?

Then someone is going to have to accept the drill holes as you'll have to pick one side to drill from. It will be definitely easier to drill from the floor side as you have thinner steel, but harder to reweld because of that thinness. On the other hand drilling from the rails will be harder but probably easier to reweld

Either way get yourself a good quality spot weld drill bit and be prepared for many hours of enjoyment with the drill and grinder
