I forget the exact date but some '71 and all later Twin Cams in Australia were badged as GT 1600's. Was said to have something to do with high insurance premiums for the Twin Cam but I have also heard it had a lot to do with poor quality control and reliability and corresponding bad public perception of the Twin Cam.
Cheers Peter

Yes there is such a thing as a 1600 GT mk1 escort. I have only seen one, owner by a really old gentleman from the British Ford Car Club in Qld, didn't know they existed so I would say they as VERY RARE, has an interior the same as twin cam but are just a Kent 1600. Guard badges should be as below:

Darren there were no 1600GT's in oz only the 1300GT's and the only ones in the UK were the Mexico with a 1600
Peter the reason for the change in name was that Twin Cams were in the same insurance bracket as a GTHO Falcon and ballistic in price to insure. They also had a poor reputation for reliability and were very basic in the trim levels considering the price which slowed sales also, so what Ford did in mid 1971 was delete the Twin Cam name and call them GT1600's which got them into the lower insurance class and they also increased the levels of twin so you started to see the high back seats, wood trims etc.

From what I've researched and ran the numbers it's the model that runs the twin cam running gear ect but powered by a Kent 1600 renamed as the 1600gt sedan

Well you learn something new every day. If that is the case, I've never heard of it. Anybody else?

Slept on it over night and I think Danny is right by saying it was only a 1300 G.T., even though I recall him saying it was a 1600; as the only 1600 available at that stage was in a Capri or did this appear after 1971?
Have also checked my Ford Escort parts illustrated catalogue and Escort G.T. (1300), Escort Std/Super (1300) 2 door both listed as such.

The only reference to a Escort 1600GT I have ever come across is in a photo in Graham Robson's Ford Escort RS book.
There is a photo of a Escort Mexico Mk1 with 1600GT front wing badges.
I think that if a car was ordered with Mexico stripes then it had 1600GT badges and if it was ordered without stripes then it had Mexico wing badges.
