Rev Limiters and Shift Lights

With limited hands on motorsport experience I am unsure if these items are wank value or have real value.

What are your experiences with shift lights and rev limiters? Do you think they are a necessary item or just added cost that can be avoided? Is the rev counter sufficient?

If you believe they are essential, what brands do you use and/or recommend??

IMO a shift light is mandatory for racing. It allows you to concentrate on the track & cars ahead, without looking at and waiting for the rev counter to do its thing.
I use a Stewart Warner 2 1/16" digital tacho with inbuilt shift light, no chips required to change shift point and has max rpm recall as well. Served me well.

Not an expert on the subject, but a shift light would seem a better option i.e. F1, WRC, and super taxis all use this method. Nothing worse than loosing power when hitting a rev limiter with someone up your ass who's trying to pass you. Others would have a better idea of how much safety margin to add between light coming on and maximum rev limit.

Combined shift light and rev limiter adds maybe $400+ to my build when I am trying to get costs back under control .

So would ppl say a shift light is more of a requirement than a rev limiter???? Seems like the only extra thing that a rev limiter will do when a shift light is installed is stop over-reving if the dirveline fails or on sloppy gear changes?

If I get a shift light I would want a nice big one. Burtons do a brand called OMEX but the lights are just LEDS

10,000 engine rebuild vs 50 dollar shift light.
doesnt need to be the most expensive, just needs to work, aim it at your face and any light is fine, wire a piezo buzzer in and fix that inside your helmet, be blinded and deafened at the same time.
Mine has an ebay special andis accurate enough that it matches the multimeter test. has recall as well and came witha shift light that is a simple dash style globe ina can with a red or amber filter. lights up the cabin thts for sure.

the OMEX speed system is one I have looked at before. Seems to offer both rev limiting and a shift light. Not sure if an LED is bright enough. Maybe I could use the LED wire as a trigger for a large light via a relay??

Get two of those frequency trigger kits, set one for the light, one to cut the ignition. A 10mm LED will be more than bright enough. You want an LED as a normal bulb will take too long to light up.
