Is this type of thing good for grinding down ugly welds?? Do the carbide tips last well as they are expensive. Is a similar bit available and worthwhile for a Dremel type tool??

Previously only used grinding disks and flap wheels..

Ta mate. I currently use a 1mm cutting disk (as a grinding disk ) but I have some welds that the angle grinder cannot get to.

Might look into a cheap 1/4" air die grinder and carbide tip as these are just MIG welds.

1/4 electric die grinder might be a better choice.

Air die grinders are compressor hungry beasts. Run a 2.2kw compressor ragged and deliver a couple hundred watts at the tool.

At the stainlless shop I worked in ,we used sanding discs on the 4" angle grinder to smooth out welds prior to polishing.
For the tight spots we used my 1/4" die grinder ( El cheapos will last a long time if kept lubricated)with a good burr (expect to pay around $50 +). I also used this method when working in panel shops when flattening out welds. (Mine aren't the prettiest welds,BUT I am only a panel beater/painter tradie).

My welds most certainly are usually not the prettiest but then I play with fire for a living

My Makita electric 1/4" die grinder has been a reliable 225 watt electric file for 20 years.

I use the Dremel for fine work and cringe at the compressor noise and running expense of a lot of air tools; not just grinders.

Are there differences in the bits? Is a bit a bit? Best place to buy and brand?

i got a set of 9 carbide burrs from "trade tools direct " $110for a set of 9 - 1/4" shank (bloody good value as ive paid $50 to $75 ea for these bits individualy from other places over the years )
they have been fantastic even on crome moly , stainless
and carbon fibre / kevlar composites ,
i use these on a daily, yearly basis & yu can stick those electric
die grinders where the sun dont shine , absolutely no control
even if the air grinders consume air , spit water etc
they have far superior throttle control & much more user friendly
