Without consulting a mk1 schematic I can only assume the following.....

Does your car use a ballast resistor? If so, the ignition switch bridges out that resistor while you're cranking to give the full (remaining) battery voltage to the coil. When you release it to the running position the resistor is placed back into circuit to limit the voltage to the correct operating level of the coil.

If for some reason this resistor is damaged (or missing) the engine might be stopping due to the lack of spark from the coil.

what is a ballast resistor? what does it look like?

no have plenty of spark from coil.

anyone else have any ideas?

anyone know how to wire in the starter button?

Even if you wire in a push button starter wont you still have the same problem as the ignition key wil still remain in the "ON" position whenever the engine is running? Or, is there another starter you're using replace the ignition switch altogether?

If you have replaced the ignition switch I cannot see that being the problem.

If you still have spark then I cannot see why your engine is stopping if you have fuel etc.........?

was wondering if i can replace the start with the button so you only turn the key to ii on the barrel and push the button rather than having to turn it all the way around and having it spring back from the start position.

where does the ballast resistor sit? i dont think that i have one.

yes as said have plenty of spark from coil. have sorted out my fuel issue(my diesel mechanic mate put the fuel pump on the wrong way!) so have plenty of fuel now.

but as i said it only seems to be that when you let the key go from the start position and it springs back to the run position it kills the motor.

if i wire in the button so that i put the key in the run position and then push the button to turn over and start the motor. will it work? how do i do it?

the back of the ignition barrel is made up of the removable contact casing with 4 wires coming out (black, red ,black yellow and yellow. of course being the same on the wiring harness on the other side)

the wires clip in to each other with red lining up with red and yellow with yellow, but black yellow and black line up on opposing sides experimented with an extension piece of wire and ran BY to BY and black to black as soon as i made contact with the klast connection the motor tried turning over. is the way my wiring harness hooked up right?

how do i do the starter button? is it just the black and black yellow? how if i do it will the motor keep running?
