I am in the process of changing alternators, due to some kind of issue with my current one (Lucas of course). The car is a Mk1 with a 2 litre Pinto, but the original alternator off the 1300 Kent went on. Not sure if its co-incidental, but after I chucked on a thermo fan, I tried to start the car a couple of days later and the battery was dead flat. I hooked it up to my old Valiant and charged it up for about an hour and a half, took the leads off and took it for a spin to charge it up. About 500 metres down the road, cruising in 5th gear, I lost all power, battery dead flat, and alternator seemingly not doing anything. Jump started it again, drove it home and parked it up. Next day, I chucked a new battery in, and started it up to chuck a multi meter over the battery and check the charge. Car stalled (which isn't unusual), and as I was trying to start it again, my mate went to the front of the car, saw the alternator lead smoking and he ripped the lead off the battery. After dismantling the wiring harness and removing and replacing the melted wires, (I thought that the fault must have been a short in the alternator positive lead which had melted and wrecked the temp sensor lead and the alternator indicator light lead, all three of which I replaced) I went to reconnect the alternator, but as soon as I touched the lead from the alt to the battery, it sparked and was obviously shorting out somewhere within the alternator. I thought I would leave the alternator disconnected and start the car just to check I had re-wired correctly, but nothing doing.
The shorted lead from the alt may possibly have damaged the ignition control module wires, but I would have thought that if this lead was damaged that the car should crank, but not fire? I checked the started motor and I could see the power lead connected and another wire below, which I assume was the earth (bit dark to see), but I also found a (non original) lead with a spade connector that appears out of the harness, which I can only guess should maybe be to a relay connected to the starter. If this is the case, where would I find a starter relay?
I have a new alternator to go on (possibly a temporary one, but its a bosch, and will do the job for now), but as far as testing goes, is there any reason why the car shouldn't start with the charge lead from the alt and the dash indicator light not in place? Would these normally form a fundamental part of the ignition circuit?
A correctly wired 2L starter motor will have the large cable from the battery bolted to the solenoid, wire from ignition switch start position to spade lug on starter solenoid, and ballast bypass wire to spade lug on starter solenoid.
You mention ignition module, depending on what ignition module you have and how it's wired, the ballast bypass may or may not be redundant.
No earth wire connection on the starter normally. Starter earths through bell housing and block. You should have a big cable from the block to the chassis.
Thanks, I think it may be beyond me, I can find a spade connector on the block just above the starter motor that I assume my homeless cable came from, so I don't think it was that.
It just strikes me as odd, aside from the main alternator feed back to the battery, I only replaced two (seemingly) non essential wires, in the engine temp sender, and the charge indicator from the alternator. The feed from the alternator back to the battery did go in the harness, and I have now run it independently (not hooked up as I said), but if correctly wired, should the this cable run solely from the alt to the battery, and not feed off anywhere else in the harness? Or are there points inside the harness with this cable feeds other circuits?
Is there a main fuse somewhere (other than the fuse box on the firewall) that I may have blown?
