Help! urgent wiper advice

G'day folks,

Urgent help needed!

Thought I had the wipers sorted, tested all good on the bench and got the things to self park but neglected to realise the body also earths through the chassis all the time, which didn't work with however I had the wires connected. Anyway, not important... I'm back to square one.

I had a look at the threads on this forum but my wiring differs (although somewhat similar) from those pictured/described and the wiring was all chopped up with no original harness/switchgear when I got it so no reference there.

I would experiment a bit more, but last time I did that I short circuited a wire and had to solder it back on. As it's the only wiper motor I have and I'm leaving for Targa in a few days, I don't won't to find out the hard way again.

Wires out of motor are as follows:

Green
Black (both green and black meet at a moulded two pin plug)
Brown
Light green with brown stripe
Darker green with blue stripe

I have a constant power feed wire going to the motor, and two ground wires that lead to a DPST switch which grounds the motor one of two possible ways (was just going to connect up the high speed). I think I'm on the right track with the switching arrangement. I almost understand what should work but I really want some confirmation as the wires differ from what others have described and what I thought should work on the bench didn't work as expected, and I'm not usually too bad with wires and stuff, so help me!

What do I connect where?????????

You're better off sticking with the standard switch if you can. When you turn the switch 'off' it really just switches power to the parking circuit and the wiper's internal switch takes over and stops the motor at the appropriate location. You'd need a switch that had a NC pair of contacts in the 'off' position to replace the standard switch.

Cheers mate, But unfortunately I don't have an original switch nor could I reach it at the dash from my seating position, nor do I want to incorporate it into the current switch panel.

Surely it's possible to hook it up to another switch, I just need to figure out what's what.

Would really like to get the self park working asap, otherwise I might have to forego the self park, just make it work for now and experiment with wires after targa.

Anyone else out there have any ideas??

Can you post or email a photo of the wipermotor you have?

Wiper circuits are tricky. Do you have a Mk1 or a Mk2 wiper motor? The colours you mention don't match either of the factory manuals I have, but that's not unusual. From what I can gather, the mk1 wiper motor is hot from the fuse box and the switch earths the motor. The mk2 wiper motor is powered from the switch and has earths on the motor.

Either way, unless you have a wiper switch you won't get the auto park to work. There are universal aftermarket ones available but have never used one.

Here's a wiring-circuit I used before (kitcar).
The wipermotor is a Mk2 item.
SW1 operates the motor, if SW1 is on SW2 selects high-speed.
If you only need slow-speed omit SW2; if you only need high-speed connect the red and green wires together.

Cheers guys,

Stang, that makes some sense that perhaps I have a mk2 motor if one is earth switched and the other power switched. Only a little bit though, would need to fiddle a bit more.

Miniliteman, I will try and post some pics asap but it's hiding behind the dash at the moment and i'm realising I still have a bunch of other things to do so I think i'm going to have to rig up a simple on/off no self park for now and figure it out after the rally. Thanks for the prompt replies fellas.... to be continued.
