Hey guys, just wondering how the anatomy of oil coolers differs between something like this:

Obviously there is a significant price difference between the two and who knows what the fittings are like on the eBay item, but from a club level motorsport point of view (i.e. mostly 3-7 lap circuit sprints), is the price difference justified?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're only doing that many laps put a decent ester based synthetic oil in and don't bother with a cooler but fit a decent oil temp gauge and keep an eye on it

Thanks Danny. I will be running a Ford/Mazda BP engine and I have had to fit an oil cooler to my KF TX3 Laser due to oil temps getting a little on the high side. The engine going in the Escort will be a little "warmer" than the Laser's, and a friend with a BP powered MX5 used for sprints has also had to fit one for the same reason.

So, back to the coolers listed - what's the deal?

What kind of tempretures and which oil

Simon if it were mine I would be using a better quality oil and and leaving it alone as you will find the Valvoline is not the slipperiest stuff around
Also what is the water tempreture doing at the same time

Just a bit on oils............

The Valvoline XLD ran 10 to 15 degrees hotter than ULX 110, in my car. If oils running over 120 degrees that needs to go to tip, 100C to 120C is ...just ok.

The ULX is/was $60.

A thinner oil may be consumed in your tired engine.

If on a budget u could try the Penzoil GT [must be made in USA, other wise u are buying shell stuff]

When u get a better engine, you should look to some of Mr Motul or Mrs Redline, for lubrication.

I'm a big fan of water to oil units.
They provide heating and cooling of oil. As a part of race car management, the vehicle should never leave the pits without 40 degrees c on the water gauge. Race car people spend a huge amount of $ on providing this, for good reason.

Budget wise...a lot of cars come with a water to oil unit as STD.
Whether this will cool your engine ???



The more expensive units look thus.




Of the air to oil coolers, the first one, u show, is very prevalent, and works well.
I think your 9 row is very marginal, though. possible more suited to a smaller output engine.
I had a 13? row on my pinto, now 16, due to over heating.





Its easy to cover a bigger cooler, [other than extra weight your carrying] than to under cool engine, with race tape etc.

and mounting.............



Some people leave the mounts loose, to allow for body flex etc. I only mounted at 3 points.
Dont use a second hand one....where do u think all the muck is hiding ?
