Filter Options

Spent the arvo looking at past threads relating to air filters.
I currently use Redline filter socks over the trumpets but I have been told a number of times that this is a rubbish solution as it disturbs the airflow into the trumpet. Anybody got a feel as to just how rubbish? i.e. not ideal vs never use?
I ultimately would still like to build an airbox (as discussed in another thread) but have not done it yet. An option I currently have is to upgrade my filtration to a pair of K&N pancakes and then maybe later encase them in an airbox with a feed of cold air from under or infront of the car.
Questions;
From the past threads it appears that the gap between the tip of the trumpet and the filter/box needs to be either equal to the carb throat diameter or 1/2 the carb throat diameter. Which is it? I have 60mm trumpets and a little over 100mm from the carb face to the strut tower so should be able to get a decent size filter in widthwise.
From the centreline of #4 trumpet to the firewall is only 55mm which seems very tight. Anybody know if that leaves enough room to get a K&N filter in there (cannot find a diagram of the K&N filter dimensions)? The side of the trumpet would probably only be 15-20mm from the filter.
Is it worth considering the ITG/Pipercross filters? Again, have read that the foam stuff is rubbish but alot (even Mr M) use them.
Any difference between using a single length K&N vs 2 K&N's?
