As per Spotlight on Ford Escorts Downunder, I agree with the following classifiaction of MK1 Escorts

1) 1970 Model- 1970 to 1972, however all 1970 dated cars have minor differences relative to cars made in 1971 and early 1972

2) 1971 Model - which is realy late 1972 cars

3) 1972 Model - which is realy early 1973 cars

4) 1973 Models- which is late 1973 through to 1975

So as can be seen from the above, people can confuse themselves as to what model they actually have as the year of manufacture and the model may not be related.

Personally, when I have looked at escorts, cars with a manufacture date of 1970 cars are similar, the 1971- early1973 are similar and all the later ones are the MK2 floorpan type with upright shocks etc.

Going back to springs. I thought all Mk1 escorts had 55mm leaf springs and the MK2's had 65mm.

Mark, you didn't happen to bring over a few spare sets of those single leaf Capri springs? I would love a set, but postage is a killer.

I think that the extra bracing on the drivers side chassis rail (engine bay) that was featured on aussie cars is for frontal crash protection - basically to help stop the steering column ending up in the drivers skull after a hard hit.

other diferences i am not totaly sure about is the anti theft ign key switch with steering colum lock same as mk2 ,(that is what is on my car & i am sure it is factory) its also the only escort with a combnation of metric & imperial nuts & bolts , mk 1 imp , mk2 metric ,
for memory , the brake system was another problem area , metric master cyl , imperial calipers & drums ???
not to mention the electrical system -- i found splices in the avo wiring , splices in the main plug thru the firewall loom that the ozzys had fuked with & had no joy in ever finding a wiring diagram for these cars ?????
any other reports on this subject would be apreciated , if ?? any body knows ???
