View topic - some bad reports duratec/zetec
hi i have just been speaking to Harris performave engines in the UK and asked them what they think of the Duratec conversion, they said that they wern't to keen on them becouse people have spent a lot of money making the power out of them when the crank flexes and smashes off the oil pump gears i know the Harris boys are Pinto crazy but they sure do put there money where there mouth is look on youtube Andy harris,I just dont want to start a conversion that i will regret, all comments and advise is appresiated
Sounds like scare mongering to me! Check out the SBD and Raceline sites - there has to be a reason that lots of winnng escorts are now running duratecs
speaking with many guys in the Uk, and looking at what many of them are doing the More modern duratec is getting the thumbs up. A pinto needs big work and dollars to make 200Hp, the Yb needs a turbo to make 200Hp, take the turbo off and it needs a large amount of expensive head work and cams to make 200Hp. the duratec with its already large well shaped ports makes 200 Hp more easily with less mechanical modification. To take each engine to the next level ie. 300Hp is where the Duratec is begining to makes sense. All engines will need more substantial mechanical modification. the cost and availability of new more modern designed parts vs the natural ability of each engine leans in favour of the duratec again. Weight has to be in the favour of the duratec. Hp for Hp the duratec is going to weigh less, which has to be a good thing and dollar for dollar the duratec is going to produce more power. Of course the Pinto and its derivatives bolt in easier and cheaper. for 200 Hp Id go zetec, just over a good pinto, for 250 Id go Na Cosworth Yb, for 300 Id go Na Duratec and for 400HP Im going Turbo YB. One thingt the Duratec doesnt have is the letters C.O.S.W.O.R.T.H. cast across the top this means something maybe not everyone but to me it does.
Having had a good pinto, a zetec and now a duratec (turbo) in the car I'd agree with what Justin has said.
Guys like the YB but they are now expensive. They're also old and being alloy subject to fatigue like any material as it ages. I've said it before but I believe you would be doing a disservice to any guy looking for advice to recommend this motor. If you already had one then this would be more feasible and Danny and Jamie (cossie55) have reliable motors producing class leading power.
Similarly the Duratec will be an expensive conversion. It will require an aftermarket bellhousing to mate with the early Ford boxes or more modification and expense to buy and install a RWD Mazda box. It will need an aftermarket ECU as well. It is not often spoken about but the wet sump from the UK is not the most effective and may hit the cross member. Most engine mounts sold suit the world cup cross member which means new cross member and some of the fabricated ones are poor quality and will affect your steering geometry. But once installed should be the most reliable of the options. And is also light. Also provides for most ability to upgrade off the shelf all the way to 300 hp (UK dyno).
The Zetec is the easiest of conversions. No new bell housing required. Lots of parts available from here and the UK including several styles of wet sumps. Manifolds allow for the webers to bolt off the pinto onto the zetec or kits for cheapish EFI. You can also pick them up from the wreckers for chump change.
If it were me and you wanted a fast road car I'd leave the pinto or convert to Zetec.
If I were sprinting or hill climbing I'd use the Zetec.
If you want or will one day want for 200 + bhp I'd convert now to Duratec.
If you were thinking about starting a YB project - I'd stop. By the time you have it making the 250 hp people claim you could have purchased a BDG (all alloy) which should make the same power, sounds better and would be worth more at the end.
Thanks guys, for all your advise i think i will go Duratec it seems to make more sense once the initial cost of fitting it is done you can then add to make more power, what do you think of the conversion parts from Eurospeed ie crossmember and sumps are like?
I didn't know that stating facts was being negative. It obviously has horsepower, and weight reduction helps this, plus it appears like it's been set up for the strip as well with the smaller diameter tyres on the rear to yield a taller ratio for launching!
Wanting to spend as little as possible and already having a Pinto in the hole, I've decided to go fo a good Pinto.
Every time I added up the cost of converting to Zetec or Duratec and then the cost of a good rebuild, I just couldn't make the numbers add up! Bearing in mind I have no fabricating skills and would have to buy everything.
Once my Pinto's done we'll see just how good it is and if I've made the right decision.
